Initial Consultation and Test Session
Our process began with a test session to understand the filmmaker’s footage and requirements fully. This crucial step allowed us to showcase our creative capabilities and gave the client a glimpse of our studio’s work culture and the skills of our colorists. The test session also enabled us to estimate the time and effort required to deliver the complete color grade.
Tackling Technical Challenges
The film, shot on a Sony FX3 camera with additional footage from DJI drones and GoPro cameras, presented some technical challenges. One significant issue was the inconsistent naming of the client’s footage, which prevented the timeline from mirroring correctly on our systems. We addressed this by exporting several XML files of shorter durations and importing them individually into one project, thus reconstructing the timeline accurately.
Crafting the Perfect Look
Once the timeline was sorted, our colorist began creating distinct looks for different scenes in the film. These initial looks were shared with the filmmaker for feedback, ensuring that our vision aligned with his. Incorporating the client’s notes and suggestions, we proceeded to complete the full color grade. We maintained an open-door policy, inviting the client and his team to review the graded sequences periodically.
Final Approval and Delivery
Upon completing the full grade, we invited the entire team to preview the final product. After receiving their approval, we rendered the film and copied the 250 GB file for the client.
